Thoughts from Psalm 73

At the time of writing this, we are currently walking through a Bible study called "What the Women Saw" on Sundays after church. In our
homework for the study, we read Psalm 73. Verse 21 caught my attention, "Then I realized that my heart was bitter and I was all torn up
inside."
So, my curiosity got the better of me as I wondered what caused the writer to be bitter.

It's important that we read Scripture in context, helping us to understand the passage as a whole. While single verses can be used to
greatly encourage us, reading the passage as a whole gives us a broader understanding. As I turned the page to see where all this
bitterness began, I noticed Asaph wrote the Psalm. He was a Levitical musician. He was an emotional man who had no problem expressing his feelings. In this passage, he expresses that good things were happening to bad people. Well, I thought, this bitterness seemed legitimate. I would feel upset about that as well. As I read through the beautifully scripted words, empathy rose within me.

I find myself struggling just as Asaph clearly was in this passage. I go from "ledge-living" to "truth-grounding" in 0.2 seconds. I realized
that my environment affects me. It has the potential to wear deeply on my emotions, and it tries to take me out...But God! He centers me. He becomes my constant. When circumstances feel uncertain, He remains the strength of my heart forever.

Asaph culminates his lament with Psalm 73:26, "My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart; he is mine forever." This verse really grounded me in truth. I will work on committing it to memory and tuck it away in my soul for the next time my environment feels unstable, uncertain, and out of my control.
